Urban Tribe

I’ve started a new series of paintings, inspired by how humans find and form tribes in modern times. I’ve always been intrigued by creating portraits of people, almost like modern tribal hippies inspired by burners… I’m going to be adding a city scape to the background, my brilliant boyfriend Brian said they needed to be grounded more in a place, it ties the whole idea and theme together…

You see it everywhere, the homeless outside my apt form protective tribes that roam the streets, we form new families out of friends. Seeking life and experiences, survival and also community. I want to show how in these times, we get so wrapped up in the fast pace, we forget that banding together makes it easier, playing in nature helps you stay saner.

New Lost Design

Back to the T-shirt grind, and I’m pretty excited about this latest one that’s coming out…Who would have thought a random weird doodle from your sketch book would end up on an equally weird shirt… My friend Theresa is a designer at Lost, she knows my style well and asked for a bunch of sketches and doodles. She laid this one out… Lost ended up buying it! So keep your eyes open…

Charlotte Russe

Here’s a shirt that Charlotte Russe just bought… was inspired by a magazine photo found at the library (which is right next door to me now, awesome)… for those of you that live in San Diego, there are rows and rows of file cabinets in the Central Library’s Art Section filled with magazine photos, text, great old retro reference, and the best part is, they check it all out on honor system… wink wink.

basically we transform a Uhaul into a mobile gallery, featuring the art work of Carla Naden, Kelly Orange, Erika Thorpe, Theresa Lavelle, Deron Cohen, Matt Foreder, me and others…

Completed painting

Finished the painting yesterday, and Ryan from Art of Framing built the back supports… On to the next one!

I’ve had the two pieces of wood laying around for awhile, and was inspired by my recent layoff to capture the feeling of being a Pisces in the moment of transition. Feeling afloat, free, and also feeling weighted down by the “reality” of the economy and constant stream of pessimistic mainstream news. The two sides of the Piscean psyche.  I’ve found it better to filter out the negative source,  listen to my instinct and go with the flow.
